Pavement

Another road, all alone
my legacy of asphalt and dust
a destiny of concrete,

Under the veil of night I leave this place,
no goodbye's and no one to see me off.
I will go until the moon hands me over
into the care of the sun.

In this life
no one sees me come,
and no one will notice me gone
but for some strange reason that makes me feel good,
and at the same time that is what frightens me most.

And I will always choose to trade soft hair and warm skin
for an open road and a dust filled mouth
for an open blue sky and the wind at my back
and one more layer of callous
I can use to wrap my heart
